Burglary defense tips
You work hard and invest in your business. Don't let break-ins, robbery, vandalism and retail theft steal what's yours.
Consider these helpful hints and strategic tips for burglary defense:
Light up the night
Burglars like to work under the cover of darkness, so they avoid brightly lit locales. Installing bright lights both inside and out is a helpful deterrent. Light all points of entry with hard-to-reach and tamper-resistant fixtures. Valuable merchandise, cash registers and safes should also be illuminated and in view. Strategically position your merchandise and cash counter, so that if thieves are inside, they can be seen from the street. In the same vein, cash register drawers should be emptied and left open after business hours.
Hedge your burglary bet
A hedge that protects the perimeter of your property from entry can help keep thieves out. Thorny hedges that are wide, not tall, and that hug the building to create a barrier should be planted. Hedges not only help provide another level of protection, but also serve to make the premises look neat and well-maintained, which further helps deter thieves.
As for entry doors, be sure to get the highest security and pick-and drill-resistant door locking system available. Choose ANSI Grade 1 locks1, which are heavy-duty commercial locks, specifically designed for superior security. To be Grade 1, locks must meet the following requirements:
- Knobs must withstand 800,000 cycles, 6 door strikes and a 360 pound weight test.
- Deadbolts must withstand 250,000 cycles and 10 door strikes (hammer test).2
Overhead and receiving doors should be equipped with high-quality, solid steel padlocks. Place bars over less-obvious means of access, such as skylights, ventilators, old coal chute openings, etc.
Detect and deflect. Sound the alarm!
Security systems, including motion detectors that sense movement within a building, as well as cameras that allow you to remotely view your premises both inside and out, can help keep your business safe. A security system with interactive services such as remote lighting control and remote arm/disarm can provide both convenience and peace of mind. Look for alarms that detect doors opening or window breakage. Burglar alarms are the most effective means of defending your business from crime and theft. Some alarms make a loud sound, scaring off intruders, while a monitored system will also communicate with a monitoring station to help alert the business owner and then the local police. Having a good burglar alarm system can help save you money in loss of goods and property and may even get you a discount on your business insurance premium*.
