How to protect yourself against fraud

While the country is still on pause, scammers and fraud artists are not. In fact, according to Jeff Thomson, a senior RCMP analyst, the Government of Canada’s Anti-Fraud Centre has received over 100 recent complaints linked to COVID-19[1].

The Anti-Fraud Centre has issued an alert, warning consumers to watch out for scams associated with the Coronavirus pandemic. Criminals are exploiting consumers’ fears and uncertainty to facilitate fraud and cyber crime.

In addition to smart home security, we’ve compiled some handy tips to keep you, your family and property safe during these trying times.

Stop door-to-door fraud with a Wi-Fi doorbell

Even as restrictions are lifting in different parts of the country, don’t answer your door to strangers. They could be scammers posing as home repair workers or even healthcare workers offering to test you for COVID-19. They will say and do anything to gain access to your home.

What you can do:

• Be sure to use your ADT by TELUS Wi-Fi doorbell to respond to anyone outside your door from the safety and security of inside your home.

• Be sure to activate the motion sensor so that, Even if someone does not ring your doorbell contains a sensor that begins recording when motion is detected. Check what is happening outside via the video sent to your smartphone. Do not open your door.

COVID-19 fraud alert: beware of fake communications from power companies

Across the country, fake communications have been reported that claim to be from power companies. For example, BC Hydro states that scams are up 350% since the beginning of April [2]. Criminals threaten customers that because they have missed paying an invoice or have an outstanding balance, their power will be cut off quickly… sometimes in a matter of hours. Such scams are looking to tap into the uncertainty and panic many of us may be feeling these days.

What you can do:

• If you receive a call, hang up immediately.

• If you receive an email or text, supposedly from your power company, do not click on the link.

• Contact your local power provider by calling or logging on to their website to learn if you do have any outstanding balance.

Protect yourself from fraud online

Beware of scam sites and listings for masks, hand sanitizers and other health-related products, including fake COVID-19 at-home test kits. These scammers take your money and either do not send the goods or they send non-compliant or worthless items.

What you can do:

• Research where you’re buying goods.

• Buy local. While neighbourhood retailers may not always have the health-related items you need, they are doing their best to keep up with the demand. Join neighbourhood Facebook groups and ask members where they have seen the products you need. Neighbours are helping neighbours during this time.

• Experts advise us to save medical masks for our frontline workers. Make your own cloth mask (you can find lots of free patterns and even no-sew versions online) or purchase them locally from friends or businesses. Many local businesses may currently be closed to street traffic, but have switched to online sales, and will appreciate your purchase. Cloth masks are washable, so they are a more sustainable choice, too.

Don’t fall for fake loan and financial services

Scammers are trying to exploit Canadians by offering fraudulent loans, debt consolidation and other financial assistance services by phone or phishing emails to try and get your personal and bank information. Note that reputable companies do not solicit customers for these services.

What you can do:

• Never give out your personal or bank information to someone you do not know.

• Never provide any personal info via telephone, email or online.

• If you are interested in any financial services, contact your bank directly.
