Top 5 Holiday Travel Tips

Planning to travel this holiday season? A family get-together or a southern getaway? Once again this year, the highways, parking lots and airport terminals will be jam-packed with people all with the same idea. Before you take off, check out our top 5 holiday travel tips for a safe and less stressful trip.

Avoid peak travel days and times

Avoid the dates and hours of peak holiday travel. Even adjusting your arrival or departure date by just one day can help you avoid much of the heaviest traffic. You can also avoid the crowds by selecting an early morning or late night flight. Since most people do not like to travel at these hours, you’ll enjoy an easier commute to the airport, a smoother airport experience and less chance of delays. Morning is best, because if there is any problem, you’ll still be able to take a later flight.

Plan ahead to leave time to spare

There is nothing more stressful than missing or almost missing a flight. For holiday season flights, arrive at the airport far earlier than usual. Plan extra time for unexpected traffic congestion or long security lines. Bring a warm coat, blanket and book, so you’re relaxed when they announce the delays due to bad weather.

Take a non-stop flight

You may have to pay a bit more, but a non-stop flight will not only get you to your destination faster, it will also eliminate any potential problems at connection points. At this time of year, winter weather can easily hamper your schedule. One delay could jeopardize your whole trip. If a non-stop flight isn’t available, try and book your connections through airports that are less likely to have bad weather or have a good record for still getting flights out on time.

Avoid Airline Ticket Counters

Check with your airline, but you may be able to print out boarding passes at home, or get them on your smartphone or at an airport kiosk. This can be a tremendous timesaver during the peak holiday travel season.

Think Twice About Holiday Gifts

If you're planning to travel by air for the holidays, it’s best not to bring presents with you. They could get lost, broken, or pose a security risk. Wrapped gifts may be opened by airport security. Ship gifts in advance of the holiday or shop online and have them delivered to your destination.

If you’re travelling during the holiday season be prepared that it will seem like everyone else is travelling, too! Accept that it will be chaotic and possibly filled with delays, challenges and problems. When you accept that certain things are out of your control, you can relax and enjoy your trip more. Adopt a zen-like attitude. Be patient. Be flexible. And who knows? Everything might just go smoothly! At the same time, if you’re going away for any length of time, remote video surveillance of your home will help reassure you as you check in from your tablet or smartphone to see all is well. Smart security that offers peace of mind is priceless!
