ADT Canada LifeSaver Story
Richard & Nate share a grateful and emotional moment with their ‘Guardian Angel’, ADT Dispatcher Gloria Renato
…It’s something that you never forget, it comes back and I dream about it and I relive it, and it made me really think about how precious life is and about how quick you can go. - Nate Schnerch
Richard Wagner and Nate Schnerch woke to find “flames shooting out of the garage” during the early hours of dawn on July 30th. It was ADT dispatcher Gloria Renato that saved the lives of this St. Andrews couple and their beloved dogs.
Richard and Nate were woken up by the sound of their ADT smoke detector, which they had initially thought was coming from their sump pump. When they realised they were mistaken, they rushed to rescue their dogs Sam and Potter, escaping the smoke that filled their home in minutes. “Something clicks; you go into a ‘fight-or-flight’ survival mode, and then it was just ‘get the dogs; get out’” explains Richard.
It was the calming voice of ADT dispatcher Gloria Renato who kept Richard and Nate calm and helped them, and their pets, exit their home safely. ADT Canada flew Gloria to St. Andrews to meet with the pair and to present her with the ADT LifeSaver Award.
“We got to meet our guardian angel and tell her thank you! The night of the fire, her voice was a bit of light in the darkness. Within minutes we would’ve been overcome with smoke in our sleep and this would’ve been a different story. Instead, ADT literally saved our lives.’’
“Flames were shooting out like a jet engine… there was this roaring sound, wasn’t just crackling”. These flames were coming out from the garage roof, and the garage had caved in which helped maintain the fire there, but nonetheless, the damage could have been much worse. The sooner the fire department gets the call, the better.
“ADT [making] that call, dispatching us that much quicker, [gives us] that much of a jumpstart” – Ken Peacock, District Fire Chief
“Monitored smoke detectors save lives” explains Joe Cariro, Chief Saint Andrews Fire Dept. Having a monitor from ADT helps make the firefighters shift their focus solely onto putting out the fire. When the fire department gets to the home with the residents already being outside, it makes putting out a fire faster.
“It’s very fulfilling [knowing] that our job and what we do helps people in real life” – Gloria Renato, ADT dispatcher that made the call to the St. Andrews Fire Department.
While the couple’s garage was destroyed, Richard and Nate are grateful their ADT system, backed up by professional monitoring, helped prevent a tragedy. “We’re face-to-face with customers who have had a real tragic event, and it connects what we’re really here to do; to save lives and property.” – Stephen Hopkins, President of ADT Canada.
“All the fear, all the panic… you’re fearing for your life, literally… It’s about the people you love, it’s about your family.” – Richard Wagner
