6 fire safety tips to help protect your precious pets

When fire strikes, our furry friends are also at risk… of smoke inhalation, injury, even death. With just a little preparation you can help keep these important members of your family safe, too.

Here are our 6 top pet fire safety tips.

1. Use collars

Always keep collars on your pets. In case of fire, the collar will help guide your pets to safety during an evacuation. Glow-in-the-dark safety collars are even better as your pets will be more visible to first responders.

2. Keep pets near entrances

While you’re out, make sure to keep your pets near doors or windows. This makes it easier for first responders to see them and get to them.

3. Include your pets in fire escape training

Get your pets accustomed to the sound of the fire alarm. You can do this with an audio recording of the alarm. Play this recording at a low volume when your pets are in a calm state. Then, you can gradually increase the volume. You can train your pets to know what to do in the case of an alarm by getting them involved with your escape route and where you meet up. Your furry companions will enjoy this exercise and rewarding them with lots of praise (and a few small treats) will go a long way.

4. Affix pet alert stickers

If you have pets, pet alert window and door stickers are a must. Fire responders might not know there is a frightened or injured pet inside unless they see the stickers! We love these pet alert stickers from Amazon.

5. Pet-proof your home

Our fur babies can actually cause a fire inadvertently, so remove any loose electrical wiring. Use knob covers when the stove is not in use and never leave candles unattended.

6. ADT Canada – helping you protect your pets!

ADT knows how important the safety of your family and pets is to you. Our 24/7 monitored smoke detectors help save the lives of both people and pets. An ADT customer recounts how our monitoring centre wasted no time in saving their dog and two cats from a fast-moving house fire. Watch the heartwarming story here.
