Creating a smart, safe home for seniors

Whether you are getting on in years or someone you love is, learn how to easily create a home that will allow you or your loved ones to enjoy safety and security.

An ADT by TELUS smart home is a safe home that harnesses technology to enable seniors to live independently in the home they love with comfort, convenience and security they can trust.

Steer clear of falls

Falls are the leading cause of injury among older Canadians with 20%-30% of seniors experiencing one or more falls per year and falls causing 85% of seniors’ injury-related hospitalizations and 95% of all hip fractures.[1] However, falls can be prevented when you:

Remove fall hazards: Keep floors clear of extension cords, throw rugs and clutter (including newspapers, laundry and shoes).

Get a grip: Install handrails in bathrooms and on all stairways and wear non-slip, indoor footwear at all times.

Light your way: Install motion detection lighting on stairways, in hallways and bathrooms. Opt for smart lighting. How does smart lighting work? By controlling your lights from your tablet or smartphone, you can turn lights on before you get home, set up a smart light schedule to have them come on and go off at a certain hour. This way, you never have to approach or enter a dark home. If, despite your best efforts, a senior does fall in their home, an ADT by TELUS panic/fall sensor, with its cutting-edge technology to detect a human fall, can ensure help will be on its way.

Protect against intruders

A smart home security system, wirelessly-connected to a monitoring centre, can help protect you and your home from unwanted intruders and ensure you’ll always receive help when you need it. Receive notifications when your system is unarmed, a window is opened or when someone enters or leaves your home.

Remove fire hazards from your home or that of an elderly loved one. This can drastically cut the risk of fire. Some fire hazards are:

Candles

Keep those regular candles for family gatherings only and use battery-operated ones instead.

Cooking

If a pot overheats or a pan splatters grease, a fire could occur in seconds. Never leave cooking unattended. Be sure flammable materials, like cloth, paper towels, and oven mitts, are kept away from heat sources.

Heating

Furnaces should be inspected and chimneys should be cleaned annually by qualified technicians. Keep space heaters at least one metre (3 ft) from anything flammable. They should never be left plugged in overnight. All homes with a fireplace, alternate sources of heating, a gas furnace or even an attached garage should be equipped with a monitored carbon monoxide detector.

Choose smart fire protection

Seniors aged 75 and older have the highest risk of dying in home fires.[2] Replace regular retail smoke detectors, that only sound an alarm, with monitored smoke detectors. A monitored smoke detector communicates wirelessly with a monitoring centre so that, in the event of a fire, the monitoring centre will receive a signal and will contact emergency responders, if needed. As most fires occur at night when seniors are sleeping, a monitored smoke detector could save a life.
