Stay energy efficient in your home this winter

With the frigid temperatures of Canadian winters, it can easily seem like your heating costs burn too big a hole in your household budget. We all want our homes to be comfortably warm, securely lit and safe from intruders, but must we spend a fortune to do it? Couldn’t that money be better spent on a vacation or renovation? There are ways to reduce your winter energy costs while still enjoying home comfort and security. Read on for our top tips for energy efficiency:

Pull the plug on phantom power

Did you know that your home’s appliances and electronics continue to draw power even when they are turned off? This is what is known as standby or phantom power, and it could account for up to 10% of your home’s energy use [1]. Turning off your computer (sleep mode does not count), unplugging those many device chargers, and shutting down all your power bars could save you money on phantom power.

Equip your home with energy-efficient windows and doors

Windows, doors and skylights can be a significant source of energy loss in your home – up to 35% [2]. With our harsh Canadian winters, this translates into higher energy bills. Replacing windows and doors and using thermal drapes and weather stripping can all go a long way into making your home more energy efficient.

The smart way to save on heating costs

Space heating and cooling represents almost two thirds of your home energy use[3], it makes sense to look for every way to save on heating this winter. A smart thermostat could save at least 8% of that energy use, [4] and lower both your energy bill and carbon footprint. How does a smart thermostat work? There’s less need for heating when you are not at home, but no one wants to enter a cold house. An ADT by Telus smart thermostat works with a convenient app and your smartphone to keep you in charge of temperature control at all times. If you’re leaving the office, simply raise the temperature so when you arrive home, you immediately enter a comfy, cozy house without having had to heat it this way all day. For carefree heating, you can also set up schedules and then override them if the temperature dips unexpectedly. Using remote thermostat control helps you reduce energy consumption. And, smart thermostat energy savings mean you could enjoy lower heating bills this winter.

Lighting your way to energy efficiency

Lighting accounts for about 9 percent of a typical home's energy use. [5] Yet, making sure your home is well-lit is a vital part of home security. Instead of leaving lights on all day in the winter, when your home is equipped with ADT by Telus smart lighting technology, you can control your lighting with preprogrammed schedules that will allow your home to look lived in, even when you’re away. Or, choose to use remote lighting control from your smartphone to turn on your smart yard lights to illuminate your driveway, as well as your indoor smart lighting, so you’ll never enter a dark home again. At the same time as you’re helping to keep your home and family safe with a smart lighting system for your home, you’ll also be conserving energy, using your lights only when you need to. No more fiddling with a tricky light timer or keeping a hall light on day and night to ensure your entry is lit!
