But even if you own or operate a company that shuts down over the holidays, special precautions should be taken to ensure your business is intact for your return to work.
Ensure you have enough competent staff
If you hire seasonal employees, give yourself enough time to conduct background checks and train these temporary workers, especially about safety and security. Since some of the biggest losses come from internal theft, a good tip is to team up seasonal employees with staff members you trust. If possible, engage security personnel, or for a smart security solution, use video surveillance to monitor your highest-traffic areas, such as entries, exits and around cash registers.

Be sure that all your security and safety equipment, including smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly with up-to-date batteries. Check decorations before you close
If you’re leaving decorations up for the holidays, make sure they don’t cover or set off any safety or security sensors (smoke, CO, flooding, motion, etc.) to avoid false alarms and emergencies.

Your security company has contact information for whom to call in case of an emergency at your company. Check that your call list is up to date and that those contacts will be available over the holidays. Inform your security company as to your holiday hours and, if necessary, add guard service during the season. Your peace of mind is worth it.
Engage others you trust
If you don’t own the building that houses your company, be sure to inform your landlord about your holiday period. If any neighbouring companies will remain open over the holidays, perhaps ask them to also keep an eye out for any strange activity at your company. •
