How to Host a Successful Holiday Party
The holiday season is here! If you want a reason to deck your halls, cook indulgent goodies and enjoy time with friends, family, neighbours or colleagues… why not throw a great holiday party? While the prospect may seem daunting, it doesn’t have to be. A good host is someone who stays relaxed and opens their home and heart with hospitality.
Here are some tips to help you make your holiday party a hit:
Set a theme
Black tie or ugly sweater? It really doesn’t matter! By picking a dress code, you set a theme and let people know what to expect. If a formal sit-down dinner and fancy cocktails are your thing, go black tie. For a casual vibe, opt for ugly holiday sweaters for a laid-back, fun atmosphere and an instant ice-breaker!
Save the date
There are just so many evenings in the holiday season and so many family, business and personal engagements. So, quick, pick your date and send out those invites! If time is tight, why not try a daytime open house party with drinks, munchies and good music and people dropping in all throughout the day. Keep your smartphone handy and let your Wi-Fi doorbell help you greet those guests. Even though the party may be in the kitchen, you can see who’s at the front door and let them in with just a click on your ADT app.
Pick a good mix… of people
The best get-togethers have an interesting mix of people. Remember to have enough people who know each other so that there’s not too much awkward silence or too many introductions. Think of your friends and invite like-minded people who, even though they may not know each other, will enjoy each other’s company.
Decorate your digs
Whether you’re hanging a garland from your crystal chandelier or turning red plastic solo cups into Santa suits by gluing on black ribbon “belts” and a square charm for a buckle, make sure your home welcomes people with a festive feel. Not everyone puts up a holiday tree, so do include one for fun. As for music, why not create a Christmas playlist from your favourite musical decade or choose evergreen classics, depending on your taste.
Eat, drink and be merry
A great party includes good food and drinks. Now’s the time to whip up those recipes you’ve been collecting all year. Have plenty of food, including appetizers and desserts. Be sure to include something for everyone, from the health conscious to vegetarians, vegans and carnivores. If you’re not a great cook or simply have no desire to toil over food, you can pick up deli or veggie platters, pizza, mixed olives, cheese, spreads and good bakery bread. As for drinks, be sure to include both alcoholic and non-alcoholic varieties. For an easy approach, skip the individual mixed drinks and set up a bar station with fruit punch, sparkling water, wine slushies and beer. Don’t forget hot chocolate in a slow cooker with tasty toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream and sprinkles and a pot of warm mulled cider on your stove top to delight your guests and fill your home with the yummy holiday scents.
Make memories last
Set up a holiday photo booth at your party. Hang festive fabric on a wall for a backdrop and have a basket of fun props nearby for guests, like Santa beard masks, elf hats and reindeer antlers. Post those party photos on social media otherwise did your fabulous party even happen?
