Tips For A Festive, Yet Safe Holiday Home
When preparing for the holiday season, don’t let safety and security slide. You can have a festive, yet safe holiday home when you follow our easy tips and tricks!
Holiday fire prevention is key -the inviting flickering lights of holiday candles, a decorated and brightly lit holiday tree and those cozy late nights by the fire can create yuletide memories, but can also be fire hazards, too. Be sure you take precautions during the season.
Make sure you never leave lit candles unattended. Avoid lighting candles around pets and children. Ensure candles are not placed too close to flammable materials like curtains, holiday trees and clothing. Use safe candle sticks or holders made of metal or ceramics. Glass holders may break if they get too hot. Always trim candle wicks to a height of ¼ before lighting candles and trim them every 2-3 hours to avoid high flames. To avoid any fire-related mishaps, choose flameless battery-operated candles.
When buying a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and add water to its base daily. When decorating your tree, always choose low-heat lights with accredited certification. Lights are rated for indoor or outdoor use. Ensure that only indoor lights are used inside your home. Check all light bulbs and cords. Replace any broken lights or cords that are frayed, or have loose connections. Never use a light string with exposed wires.
Home Decorating Safety
Today, holiday decorations inside our home mean more than just trees. Fairy lights, wreaths, banners and other decorative items add a festive touch to every room. Be sure hanging decorations are not placed near heating sources or doors. This could cause unplanned movements and interfere with your home security sensors resulting in false alarms.
Safe Outdoor Lighting Displays
Plan your outdoor lighting display according to the number and location of available, grounded outdoor outlets. Avoid overloading outlets and never exceed the maximum number of light strings that can be linked together. When decorating your home outdoors, stay at least 10 feet away from power lines. Use timers and lighting schedules to have both smart lights and holiday lights come on and go off, creating a festive look and making your home appear lived in, even when you’re not home.
Keep your family and friends safe this holiday season
The holidays means gathering with family and friends, overnight guests and busy schedules. Make sure that through it all, your home is protected with monitored smoke detectors that are in good working order. Be sure your overnight guests are protected with smoke detectors outside guest bedrooms as well as other areas, like the basement if guests or family members will be sleeping there. In addition to festive chocolates and extra towels, leave your home’s fire escape plan in guest areas. That way, in case of a fire, your guests will be familiar with exit routes and your safe meeting place.
